WHO Stats on Indoor Air Pollution Shocking
According to the World Health Organization, 4.3 million people die each year from exposure to household air pollution. While it is true that most of these occur in low or middle-income nations, a shocking 19,000 deaths occur in higher-income nations, such as the US. Kirk Smith, a professor of global environmental health at UC Berkeley informed the WHO that having an exposed fire in a kitchen was “like burning 400 cigarettes an hour.”
